anthem logoAnthem Inc., provider of Blue Cross and Blue Shield health insurance, revealed that hackers broke into a database housing records of 80 million Anthem customers and employees in, what the Wall Street Journal says could be the largest healthcare data breach in history.

The company reported that “tens of millions” of records were stolen, including personally identifiable information such as names, social security numbers, birthdates, and more in what is described as a “sophisticated” attack. At this point, health records and payment details do not appear to have been compromised, according to Anthem officials.

This data breach trumps the 4.5 million records compromised in a Community Health Systems breach from last year, and is one of the largest in an ever-growing list of high profile breaches. Healthcare data is increasingly of interest to hackers because it can typically be worth up to ten times as much as credit card data on the black market. Legacy infrastructure, a complex network of services and technologies, and often short-staffed IT teams make healthcare organizations prime targets for such attacks.

That’s why we created TrueVault. We want CIOs to be able to sleep at night knowing that their data is safe and secure. TrueVault’s advanced encryption and secure databases are designed to withstand such attacks and are regularly tested by white hat hackers who use “penetration tests” to attempt to defeat system safeguards.

With TrueVault’s HIPAA compliant, secure data store and API, protected health information data, such as patient records and other personally identifiable information is “shredded” and distributed to keep hackers from accessing individual records. In addition to our encryption and security practices, TrueVault is backed by breach insurance which protects companies who store data on TrueVault.
