We have 70,000 people who share the same first and last name and exact birth date with two or more people. If your name is Maria Garcia, we have 2,488 of you, and 231 of you have the same birth date. It’s not uncommon for us to have two people with the same first and last name in the same unit.

The solution:

In less than two seconds, the scanner creates a high-resolution infrared photograph of the vein pattern, reportedly 100 times more accurate than fingerprints.

Implementation:

Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas piloted the palm-vein scanners last fall…About 40,000 medical records now have palm-vein scans, with 17,000 being added each month.
