You arrive at the doctor’s office for what you think is a routine sonogram. And then you get the news….”Fibular hemimelia.”

You and your significant other get the good news. You are expecting your first child. You call your friends and family. You start making plans for the changes to come.

You arrive at the doctor’s office for what you think is a routine sonogram. And then you get the news….”Fibular hemimelia.”

You first reaction would probably be “Fibular hemi..what? Simply put, fibular hemimelia is a condition in which the bone in the leg has not developed normally, leaving the limbs shorter than average. It is a serious condition and, in many cases, the recommendation is for amputation of the affected limb.

What would you do? How would you react?

This is exactly what happened to Tim and Marisa Haney from Orlando, Fla., when they received this news about their unborn daughter.

What followed was uncertainity, frustation, determination and finally their arrival at the International Center for Limb Lengthening, where they found hope for their daughter Emma’s’ fibular hemimelia with the help of Dr. Shawn Standard.
