During April, National Donate Life Month, The Living Legacy Foundation of Maryland, a federally designated organ procurement organization, has partnered with Sinai Hospital and Northwest Hospital to provide employees and members of our community information about registering as an organ, eye and tissue donor.

Together, we’ll urge health care professionals and the public to celebrate the tremendous generosity of those who have saved lives by becoming donors, and to raise awareness for the urgent need for lifesaving organs and tissues.

The “Donate Life” flag is raised when there is an organ donor at the hospital.

Sinai and Northwest hospitals’ committment to their communities have had some palpable, and powerful, results. Here are some fast facts:

  • There are over 117,000 people nationwide waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant.
  • That number includes more than 2,400 people in Maryland.
  • On average, 18 people on the national waiting list die every day due to the lack of available organs.
  • In 2012, there were nine organ donors at Sinai and one organ donor at Northwest: This saved the lives of 28 people.
  • In 2012, there were also nine tissue donors at Sinai and 13 tissue donors at Northwest.
  • Just one tissue donor can help up to 50 people, while one organ donor can save up to eight people.
