Skincare is a multi-billion dollar industry, with hundreds of different companies selling thousands of different products worldwide. But while every cream and lotion out there gets marketed as essential for achieving healthy skin, is that true? It depends on the type of product and the ingredients it contains.

The following skincare products are most likely to make a difference in the health and wellness of your body’s outermost layer:

Gentle cleanser

Regular washing is an essential part of having healthy skin. However, many face soaps and body washes can be harsh on sensitive skin types. That’s why it’s important to use gentle facial cleansers and mild soaps. Gentle skincare products ought to be gently applied; avoid vigorously rubbing and overwashing. Furthermore, resist the urge to wash your face more than twice a day, regardless of the cleanser’s mildness. Doing so causes the skin to dry out and appear dull.

Hydrating cream

Dry skin leads to cracks, wrinkles, and premature aging. By using a hydrating cream, individuals can add water to their dry skin. It’s a healthy way to keep skin silky smooth and even reverse the signs of aging. The best thing about hydrating cream is that it doesn’t have to be used more than once per day to get the full benefits.

Daily moisturizer

While hydrating creams add moisture to the skin, daily moisturizers limit the amount of water lost throughout the day. Unlike hydration cream, daily skin moisturizer can be applied multiple times during the day as needed. Moisturizers become especially important for protecting skin during the winter months, when dry air acts like a wick sucking moisture from anywhere it exists, including the skin.

Makeup remover

Though great for making us look our best, most makeup contains chemicals and other harsh ingredients damaging to the skin if left on for too long. Since cosmetics are designed to be hard to remove, a dedicated makeup remover product is essential for keeping your skin looking its best. As the name suggests, simply use makeup remover to wipe away concealer, mascara, lipstick, and more. Most makeup removers come in handy wipes, making the process simple and easy, especially on-the-go.

Sleep serum

Antioxidant sleep serums are designed to help repair skin damage overnight. While some argue the benefits of sleep serums are dubious and that it’s an example of the placebo effect, others swear by the anti-aging properties these products are alleged to possess. Sleep serums present zero risks from a health and wellness standpoint so long as you only apply them to recently washed skin right before bedtime. Make sure to wash your face when you wake up to rinse away any residue.

With so many different skincare products to choose from, it can be challenging to decide what’s the right regimen for your skin. The truth is we only need a handful of skincare products to get the job done. These select products serve to keep our skin looking youthful and healthy all year long. Instead of trusting empty promises about strange-sounding skincare products, stick to the stuff that works. It turns out it’s the same group of products we’ve been told to use for years. Who knew?
