Some health issues can be difficult to talk to a doctor about due to embarrassment. It’s important to remember that your doctor has heard it all, so you should never be too shy to ask about issues that are concerning to you. That being said, let’s take a closer look at five embarrassing women’s health issues and how to deal with them.

Contents
  • 1. Vaginal Odor
  • 2. Low Libido
  • 3. Pain During Sex
  • 4. Bumps “Down There”
  • 5. Body Odor

1. Vaginal Odor

There are a few common causes of vaginal odor. A pH imbalance could be to blame, in which case you might consider trying vaginal odor products to see if they provide any relief.

In some cases, a bacterial infection, yeast infection or sexually transmitted infection (STI) might be to blame, and you might need antibiotics from your OBGYN. This is one of those women’s health issues that can be hard to talk about, but keep in mind that your vaginal odor is never as bad as you may think but it can be serious, so be sure to get it checked out.

2. Low Libido

A low sex drive can be an embarrassing health issue, but it’s not uncommon — especially for women in their 40s and 50s. Hormonal issues brought about by naturally declining estrogen levels that occur during perimenopause and menopause can be to blame. Hormonal issues can happen at any age, however, so be sure to have an honest and open discussion with your gynecologist.

3. Pain During Sex

This is another health issue that may bring about some embarrassment, but the solution is often simple. Infections are generally the most common cause of pain during sex, so talking to your doctor early can help resolve the problem. Otherwise, you could spend time suffering with this uncomfortable issue longer than you have to. If an infection isn’t the cause of pain during sex, it’s important to talk to your doctor to get to the bottom of it.

4. Bumps “Down There”

Experiencing a bump down there can be completely terrifying. Some women might have a difficult time talking to their doctors because they find it embarrassing. Others may put the issue off out of fear of what the diagnosis may be. Could it be herpes?

The answer is yes — it could be, but it might be a number of other alarming issues. Although STIs such as herpes and genital warts may be the cause, skin cancer can present as a pimple-like lesion “down there.” Vulva cancer is also a risk.

Vaginal bumps can also be more harmless. In some cases, you might just have a cyst.

The sooner you get a bump checked out, the better. Odds are, it could be completely harmless and getting it diagnosed now can save you the panic. If you do have an STI or cancer, getting it treated sooner rather than later is best.

5. Body Odor

We often think our bodily odors are worse than they are. If you find yourself questioning why you’re so stinky, it’s important to talk to your doctor. Switching to a prescription antiperspirant can help, but sometimes the cause is a more serious one.

Certain medical conditions can cause strong or unusual body odor. Some of these include kidney disease, liver disease, overactive thyroid, diabetes, or diabetes-related ketoacidosis — just to name a few potential causes. Getting an early diagnosis with these problems is key, so don’t wait when it comes to talking to your doctor about this health issue.

These are just five embarrassing women’s health issues that you might encounter at some point. If you often find yourself having a difficult time talking to your doctor about any concerns or health issues you may be experiencing, you might want to consider switching to a new doctor who you feel comfortable having open discussions with. The right doctor will put you at ease when it comes to your health.
