The ACA has put patients at the center of healthcare services. A patient-centric healthcare approach in this digital era means a revised definition of quality in the physician-patient relationship. When it comes to healthcare services, patients shell out a hefty amount from their pocket and want nothing less than the best. The services in healthcare are no longer limited to just cost as consumers now evaluate quality and experience in the same equation. Research highlights from the 2015 Healthcare Consumer Trends by National Research Corporation states that reputation in healthcare matters more to consumers when choosing a brand than any other industry, e.g. hospitality, retail, airline, etc. The new generation of quality measurements in healthcare require a different mind-set and a different 'toolbox' to handle the hurdles. It’s the need of the hour for healthcare providers and others across the healthcare value chain to adopt the patient-centric approach for surviving in the vast competitive ocean of healthcare services. Patient-centric care is an approach that develops through effective communication, empathy and a positive physician-patient relationship. The primary purpose is to improve patient care outcomes and satisfaction and to reduce patient symptoms and unnecessary costs. It’s a win-win situation for both physicians and patients. While healthcare providers are able to support their patients in becoming more compliant with treatment and management of their conditions/diseases, patients feel more satisfied with the care that they are receiving. PwC’s Health Research Institute’s annual report 2016 states that health systems should keep an eye on the consumer experience as they expand and extend. More partnerships and more caregivers could mean confusion for patients and poor customer experiences. To differentiate their practice among competitors, patient satisfaction can be used as a competitive distinguishing factor. Although patient satisfaction cannot really provide tangible benefits, but an experience that exceeds patient expectations for what a practice/hospital can provide is very important as it creates loyal patients who return for future health needs and refer their family and friends. Happy and satisfied patients are a secret marketing weapon for healthcare providers, whether they are physicians, dentists, physiotherapists or hospitals. Your patients are the new-age digital health decision-makers. In this era of Internet and social media, they now have multichannel access to information related to health. Needless to mention, they have gained new power to make their decisions; whether it’s choosing a healthcare provider or referring a physician to family and friends. By converting your satisfied patients to be your brand advocates, you can capitalize and use their voice as an effective marketing strategy to reach out to many other potential patients. To strive and thrive, in the U.S. many healthcare organizations are applying patient-centric approaches to healthcare. It’s all about what matters to patients, so it makes a lot of sense for the healthcare industry to place patients' healthcare experience at the center of their policies and procedures. The best deliverables are a combination of great communication for a positive physician-patient relationship, disciplined measurement and analysis of patient feedback and commitment to technology innovation – the formula for improving patient engagement and care.

The patient’s satisfaction is vital for nurses because when they are sick, their families rely heavily on them for advice and recommendations about where to go or what to do to get better faster. Satisfaction also helps determine whether patients return for future treatment at the same facility again, which means that if they were not satisfied, then they would not return.

The following are ways to improve satisfaction within hospitals:

Patient Satisfaction Surveys

It is crucial that patients are satisfied with their experience at the hospital, and one of the ways to do this is through patient satisfaction surveys. Patient satisfaction surveys can help determine how satisfied patients are regarding various aspects of their treatment within hospitals which will allow hospitals to improve on areas that need improvement.

For example, hospitals can use patient satisfaction surveys to measure the performance of staff members and how they interact with patients. Studies have shown that when patients are satisfied with their nurse, it leads to a shorter recovery time and an overall better experience.

Improve Human Services

If you want your hospital facility to be more comfortable for patients, make sure that their treatment experiences are as human as possible. You can do this by providing them with a safe atmosphere and listening to what they have to say. Human services software can also be beneficial. The software analyzes the needs of patients and then sets up a personalized plan that can be very useful regarding patient satisfaction.

Adjust the Lighting

The lighting within hospital facilities can also affect how comfortable or relaxed patients feel when seeking treatment. Thus, it is crucial always to make sure that you adjust the lighting of your rooms to make them seem softer and more relaxing. It would be best to keep in mind that different patients have different perceptions of what makes them feel comfortable, so do not assume that all patients like their rooms darker than usual.

Improve Communication

Communication between nurses and patients is key to the hospital experience. Nurses must be able to communicate clearly what treatment they will be performing on patients. When the patients are mentally and emotionally ready for what’s to come, it will be a smoother process for both parties. The better the communication, the better the experience will be for patients, which means that they will return without being convinced.

Communication matters because if they are satisfied with their treatment, they would want more of it even if they did not need it. Good communication also demonstrates how important it is to listen to your patients and what they have to say; otherwise, you might end up making the same mistakes again and not realizing it until it is too late.

Technology

Make sure you have good technology within your hospital facility. People expect technology to work well when they are in hospitals because they want to communicate with their family members or friends. It can also help improve the overall experience when it comes to locating certain areas within the hospital facility because you would not have to wander around too much to find places.

Improvements in medical technology can also help improve patients’ satisfaction since it may be somewhat inconvenient for patients to undergo treatment if they do not understand what is going on. Depending on your hospital facility, technology can either make or break the satisfaction of your patient, which is why every detail should always be taken into consideration to improve the overall experience.

Provide Cleaning Service

Another thing you need to think about is making sure that the hospital facility is clean and tidy to make your patients feel comfortable. The cleaner it is, the better your facility will “appear,” which can reflect how organized you are when taking care of patients and your standards of maintaining the facilities.

Even studies show that an unkempt hospital facility can cause infections or spread diseases, which will lead to your patients having to miss work or school, which can be very stressful.

Healthcare facilities need to understand that their patients’ experience is one of the most important reasons why people seek treatment through hospitals. Thus, you should always make sure that you are doing everything in your power to ensure that the overall experience is as satisfying as possible for your patients.

The above suggestions can help hospitals improve how they take care of their patients to improve their satisfaction. Patient experience is essential in ensuring that hospitals continue to grow and thrive while providing the best service possible.
