Making sure company outings are setup to be safe and healthy

Company outings are excellent for building stronger workplace relationships and enhancing employee collaboration. Whether you’re going on for an outdoor adventure or an exciting creative workshop, these activities provide valuable opportunities to create a more cohesive unit and boost everyone’s morale.

However, with all the fun and excitement, it might be easy to overlook various safety and health protocols during company outings. Prioritizing the two is vital to promoting a risk-free event that achieves its overall goal of creating a memorable day with colleagues. You also have to make sure that they have as little stress as possible, since stress is terrible for employee mental health.

Read below for some essential tips you should practice during company outings. Ensure everyone’s safety and health throughout the event by doing the following:

Conduct a Risk Assessment

Risk assessment is determining potential hazards in an event and analyzing what could happen if they occur. Before heading out to your team-building event, conducting a risk assessment for all activities is best.

Company outings pose various risks to employees, varying depending on location. For instance, the dangers of camping differ from those of a day at a resort. So, start with that and work your way from transportation to the last activity of the event.

Additionally, you must consider everyone’s physical and mental conditions and identify certain risks for them. Some may find specific elements of the event dangerous, while others don’t. For instance, employees dealing with thalassophobia or fear of open water might not be fond of participating in aquatic activities. Knowing these risks will enable you to prepare for anything and create safety measures for everyone.

Once you’ve finished your risk assessment, attendees must know about these hazards before the event. Share with them the dangers you’ve identified to help them prepare for any accidents that could happen along the way.

Bring First Aid Kits

Accidents can happen unexpectedly during a company outing. Bringing a packed first aid kit can make a significant difference in addressing minor injuries like cuts, bruises, sprains, or burns. It can also help you mitigate the damage from severe injuries until help arrives.

Some of the basic supplies that should be in your kit include bandages, antiseptic solutions, adhesive tape, scissors and tweezers, and cotton balls. You must also bring medications like laxatives, antacids, and antihistamines. Bring epinephrine auto-injectors, if available, for participants dealing with severe allergies. Otherwise, don’t forget to remind them to bring their own.

Lastly, a first aid manual will come in handy to guide you while helping an injured person. Ensure that this copy is up-to-date with the latest first-aid procedures to conduct the best practices for someone in need.

Ensure Hydration and Nutrition

While doing team-building activities, always ensure everyone stays hydrated and eats healthy throughout the event. These events typically involve strenuous activities that could wear out participants. Without proper care, many could stop enjoying themselves in the early hours of the company outing, disrupting the fun of the day.

Proper hydration and nutrition play a crucial role in maintaining optimal physical performance. If you give participants enough water and the right snacks, you can help boost their energy for the rest of the event. Otherwise, depriving them of such necessities could lead to fatigue, dizziness, and decreased cognitive function.

The key is to provide an adequate water supply for the whole group. You can also advise them to bring their own and prepare extra if they run out. Then, offer various nutritious snack options for the team during breaks. These include diced fruits, pepperoni slices, wheat crackers, and hard-boiled or deviled eggs. They’re delicious yet provide enough nutrients to boost your employees during the event.

Establish Emergency Protocols

In case of any unprecedented emergencies, like natural calamities or any form of attack, it’s best to have clear guidelines on what to do.

For one, you must designate a group of individuals to act as a response team in emergencies. They will guide other employees to safety and apply first aid if necessary. You must also have assembly points where everyone should gather for any incident. These spots will ensure everyone’s safety by preventing them from wandering into the wrong area.

Lastly, you must conduct briefings regarding these decisions days before the company outing. Review the procedures with employees to make a more cohesive plan that guarantees safety. Plus, provide emergency contact information inside and outside your company. These include numbers of employees can call in case they get separated from the group and those to reach local authorities.

Prepare Warm-Up Exercises

Warm-up exercises are vital to decreasing muscle tension and reducing injury risks. It’s also crucial to enhance the body’s performance level for various physical activities. Through warm-up exercises, the body increases blood circulation and oxygen supply to the muscles, making them optimized for strenuous movements. That means doing them will enable participants to be pumped and ready for a day of challenging activities.

Additionally, warm-up exercises also serve as icebreakers for participants. A fun routine with the whole group encourages interaction and boosts overall morale. Plus, doing a few routines can also help release endorphins, which help reduce stress and improve mood, adding to a positive group dynamic for the whole team-building experience.

Have a Fun and Safe Event

Team collaboration is one of the main points of company outings. However, safety and health should always be on top of that to ensure a successful workplace event. Following the essential tips above will ensure all participants have an enjoyable and incident-free experience.
