How to Recognize the Signs of Hormonal Imbalance in Men

Just like many women who deal with menopause, men also have a complex array of chemicals at work inside their bodies that strive to keep everything in balance, especially hormones. Unfortunately, should something happen that causes problems in how your body’s chemicals work with your brain, the result may be a hormonal imbalance that can affect your quality of life in many important ways. If you want to know how to recognize the signs that may indicate you have a hormonal imbalance, here’s all you need to know.

Contents
  • Increased Thirst and Urination
  • Sleep Problems
  • Memory and Concentration Issues
  • Losing Muscle Mass
  • Erection Problems
  • Bottom Line

Increased Thirst and Urination

A lesser-known sign you may be experiencing a hormonal imbalance is having increased thirst and urination levels from what has been normal for you in the past. In many men, a visit to the doctor will discover that the reason for their increased thirst and urination is due to the development of Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, both of which can result in hormonal imbalances in men. Such changes to your diet and losing weight can often get your hormone levels balanced out.

Sleep Problems

If you are under quite a bit of stress, you may attribute any sleep problems you may be having to just having too much on your mind. However, disrupted sleep can also be one of the most telling signs of hormonal imbalance in men, no matter your age. If you are dealing with anxiety, the constant stress your body is under can lead to an imbalance of both testosterone and cortisol, making it much harder for you to fall asleep, stay asleep for a prolonged period of time, or stay on your normal sleep schedule. To reduce stress, try such things as:

  • Meditation,
  • Listening to music,
  • Exercise,
  • Yoga,

Once you find a technique that works, your hormonal imbalance may begin to correct itself.

Memory and Concentration Issues

While it’s perfectly normal to forget something now and then, having it happen more than you are used to can be frustrating and concerning. Should you be having problems with thinking clearly or feel like your brain is always in a “fog,” you should visit your doctor to see if this is being caused by a hormone imbalance. One of the most common reasons behind memory and concentration issues is having a thyroid gland that is either overactive or underactive, which may have you dealing with imbalances of adrenaline, cortisol, and testosterone. Many men tend to ignore this problem. If you do as well, this can only make your hormonal imbalance worse over time, so be willing to discuss your problems and concerns with your doctor.

Losing Muscle Mass

If your abdominal area is starting to get fatter while other parts of your body are losing more and more of their muscle mass, you can chalk this up to a hormonal imbalance. A very common symptom in many men who deal with hormonal imbalances, research has shown that when low testosterone levels and high estrogen levels are present within a man’s body, a loss of muscle mass is almost certain to occur, even if you are exercising and trying to eat a healthy diet.

Erection Problems

If there is one thing that will make you feel like less of a man, it is having erection problems that won’t allow you to have your penis stay firm enough for sexual intercourse. If you’re dealing with this embarrassing and frustrating problem, talking to your doctor will likely have you finding out your ED problems are related to a hormonal imbalance. If your pituitary gland is working too hard, it can produce abnormally high levels of prolactin, which can contribute to ED. Your thyroid gland can also be responsible for your ED since it may be producing too many or too few hormones to keep your body in balance.

Bottom Line

If you do have a hormonal imbalance, the good news is that the problem can often be corrected through lifestyle changes. Whether you reduce your stress levels, eat a healthier diet, lose weight, or limit your tobacco or alcohol intake, these steps can go a long way toward solving your hormonal imbalance and the subsequent problems that follow.
