It was an exciting week for the American Hospital Association, as they commenced their 2012 Annual Meeting, Champions for Cure.    With key focuses on Medicaid, Medicare, clinical integration, diversity, health information technology, medical education and the all important quality and patient safety, there were a number of impressive keynote speakers.  In particular, I happened to log into twitter just in time to catch a few tweets regarding south Florida Democratic Representative, Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s, speech.  A breast cancer survivor and current Vice Chair of the Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues, I was intrigued to hear her imploring the audience to engage their constituents in healthcare innovation.

I applaud her comments, as well as, those captured in Dr. Onil Bhattacharyya’s TEDxStouffville talk, “Disruptive Innovations to Integrate Healthcare Systems”.  As a clinician scientist with the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute of St. Michaels Hospital and an assistant professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine and the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation, he studies innovative health service delivery models for the poor in low and middle income countries and is the co-lead of Building Bridges to Integrate Care, an Ontario Ministry funded initiative to incubate and replicate new models of care for complex chronic disease.
