Pills for controlling pregnancy have become the go-to method for terminating pregnancies. This can be a good idea for women that are having issues dealing with all of the medical complications that come with being pregnant. Due to ease of availability and simple process, pills that help with controlling pregnancy are a convenient way to get a procedure to control the pregnancy. But how do they actually work? Are these pills safe? Do pregnancy control pills have any side-effects? If these questions are on your mind, then you are in the right place. Read on for all the answers.

How pills for controlling pregnancy work

Using pills to control your pregnancy can be non-invasive and doesn’t involve any kind of surgery. The procedure itself involves taking two types of medication: mifepristone and misoprostol. The first step involves taking the mifepristone pill(s), which acts by limiting progesterone in the body. Progesterone is a hormone that is necessary to sustain a pregnancy. The mifepristone also causes the uterine lining to break down, resulting in the embryo detaching from the uterus.

The second pill, misoprostol, is normally taken 24-48 hours after the mifepristone. Misoprostol causes contractions in the uterus which is how the pregnancy tissues (including the foetus) are expelled from the body. You can learn more about this medication on this webpage. Together, these drugs mimic a miscarriage-like process for the body, providing a safe and effective way to terminate pregnancy.

However, it is important to note that these pills are only suitable for pregnancies up to 10 weeks. If you think you may need to terminate your pregnancy, you should consult your GP or an appropriate clinic as early as possible to get the best results.

Are these types of pills safe?

Yes, as far as medical procedures go, pregnancy control or termination pills are considered to be very safe; in the vast majority of cases, they do not involve any surgical intervention. Rarely, if the tissue has not been expelled completely, or if the process is incomplete, there is a chance a small surgery involving manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) will be required to complete the process. The side effects associated with these types of pills primarily include nausea, cramps, and diarrhoea which are transitory in nature. In some cases, women may also suffer from brief alterations in bleeding patterns as well as slight stomach discomfort, but again, these are temporary.

When you attend an appointment for a medical procedure, your practitioner will ask about your medical history to ensure there are no issues that will increase your risk or that are likely to lead to complications.

Alternatives to these types of pills for controlling pregnancy

While these types of pills are an effective, non-invasive way to deal with unwanted pregnancy under 10 weeks, for pregnancies over 10 weeks, a different procedure, called surgical procedure, is required. This involves a technique called dilation and evacuation, also referred to as D&E. This involves removing the contents of the uterus with a very gentle suction.

If, for any reason, your medical professional says that these types of pills are not suitable for you, whether that’s due to medical history or another reason, they may suggest this option.

Making decisions about pregnancy

If you are considering a procedure to end your pregnancy, you can rest assured that these kinds of pills are a safe and effective way to terminate pregnancy. It is now easier than ever to find reputable clinics in London who provide these types of pills by post, you simply order the abortion pills online. This means that everything can be done from the comfort and privacy of your home.

As a word of caution, we must stress the importance of seeing your doctor before using these pills. You will need to get a prescription from them and make sure that the procedure will be safe before you can get the procedure. Your doctor will help you navigate this process.

Making the decision to terminate a pregnancy can be emotionally challenging. If you are able to, seeking support from a friend or family member before, during and after, can make a difference to your experience.
