“If we find mistakes, which by the way happens quite a bit, we can go back and speak the same coding language with the doctor’s office or hospital and say, ‘Let’s re-evaluate this and see if it needs to be coded differently and resubmitted,’” says Bricker, at the corporate offices near Valley View shopping center.

Compass mines reviews of physicians from public data — board certification, lawsuits and actions against them by the state medical board.

It finds doctors in the member’s insurance network and screens for appointment availability. Some busy doctors won’t see a new patient for six to eight weeks, Bricker says. “We might find three in-network primary care physicians who take same-day or next-day appointments and are within their geographic area.”

Companies pay $5 per employee per month, and members can access the service through phone calls or emails that are handled by Compass workers in Dallas.
