Six months ago, Box CEO Aaron Levie said the cloud storage company was HIPAA compliant and wanted to manage all content in the healthcare sector.

Surely he didn’t mean all the content, but Box’s aggressive push into the vertical has resulted in 13 new partnerships with digital health companies that are using the platform as part of their products. It’s also buddied up with the fifth-largest hospital system in the country, Dignity Health, for a challenge that’s calling on developers to build new clinician apps that would use Box to deliver engaging content to patients.

Box offers a HIPAA-secure, mobile accessible content sharing platform. The company claims it’s doubled its sales in the healthcare industry and expanded its customer base, which includes GlaxoSmithKline, Johns Hopkins Medicine and Alere, since April.

Missy Krasner, a Google Health alum and entrepreneur-in-residence at Morgenthaler Ventures, just joined the team full time as managing director of healthcare and life science. In a phone interview said noted that the company soothes some of the communication pain points for clinicians by allowing them to collaborate across the care continuum with other clinicians outside of their own organization.

“We’re not in the business of sucking data out of an EHR if it’s structured,” she said. “We’re trying to capture the 40 percent of data inside of an EHR that’s unstructured.” That could be anything from a scanned referral note that’s sent as a PDF to radiology images.

Among the companies now integrating it in their platforms it are Nephosity, which allows doctors to view medical images collaboratively with others in different locations, and Medikly, which helps pharmaceutical companies reach and engage with physicians.

Krasner said Box is going to partner with “a ton more EHR, PHR and telehealth companies.” It’s also catalyzing growth with a challenge that opens today and runs through January. Box is asking developers to build web or mobile platforms that will deliver health information to patients. Specifically, it’s interest in apps aimed at the outpatient, emergency room and inpatient workflow areas.

Whoever wins the challenge will receive a $100,000 convertible note from The Social + Capital Partnership and the opportunity to propose the winning solution to Dignity Health as a potential pilot project. Check out all the details here.
