Spinal cord injuries are always serious; some may even involve the cervical spine. So how exactly do spine injuries happen? Just like other types of injuries, there are several possible causes. The most important thing for people to remember is to reach out to a medical professional as quickly as possible if they believe they have suffered an injury to the spine. Even a relatively minor spinal injury has the potential to lead to permanent complications.

A Penetrating Injury

One of the most common ways a spinal cord injury happens is through a penetrating injury. In a penetrating injury, a foreign body stabs the back right where the spinal cord is located. Then, it can potentially sever some or all of the nerves in the spinal cord, leading to a severe injury. For example, some people may suffer a penetrating interview of the spinal cord during military service. Other people may suffer a penetrating spinal cord injury if they are physically assaulted. A penetrating wound of the spinal cord is always severe, and the doctor is required to remove the foreign body to prevent further damage from taking place.

A Motor Vehicle Accident

In other situations, someone may suffer a spinal cord injury in a motor vehicle accident. There are a few ways someone may suffer a spinal cord injury if involved in a car crash. First, as mentioned above, someone may suffer a penetrating spine injury in a car crash. This could come in metal shrapnel or a piece of glass. Then, other people may suffer a spinal cord injury if they are ejected from the vehicle. Furthermore, when someone is involved in a car crash, the extreme forces could cause them to flex forward, throwing the chest over the knees. This could lead to a significant flexion injury of the spinal cord, causing severe damage.

A Serious Fall

Finally, there are other situations where someone may suffer an injury to the spinal cord and a slip and fall accident. For example, if someone slips on a wet floor, they could strike their head, neck, or back on the ground, leading to a spinal cord injury. There are other situations where someone may fall from a significant height. For example, they may fall from a second or third-story window, or they may fall out of a tree. When someone hits the ground, the extreme compressor forces could cause fractures of the vertebrae, leading to a significant spinal cord injury. It is critical for anyone who has suffered an injury to the back to reach out to a medical professional as quickly as possible for a comprehensive evaluation.

Reach Out to a Medical Professional Quickly

In the end, these are just a few of the most common ways a spinal cord injury might occur. First, a minor spinal cord injury must be evaluated as quickly as possible. There is a chance that the doctor may order an X-ray, a CT scan, or an MRI to take a look at what is happening underneath the skin. Then, there are some situations where a surgical procedure might be required to help someone recover. Even though there might be some situations where complications could be permanent, early intervention can significantly affect someone’s overall quality of life.
