The amalgam of beautiful colours in the creation of this world is something worth seeing. Nature knew this fact that it should be enjoyed and appreciated; hence it bestowed us with two eyes and a sense of appreciation to see and enjoy the beauty around us. Ask a blind person the value of vision. Most of us usually stay oblivious towards the importance of this blessing and fail to take care of it properly. This is the reason why eyeglasses have become a norm today.

Eyeglasses are an indispensable part of daily life for most of the Americans. According to a recent report, 7 out of every 10 adults in the United States of America use some type of corrective lenses that include prescription glasses, contact lenses, or over the counter eyewear. Health and market sectors are introducing new methods to facilitate easy access to frequent eye check ups and instant eyeglass delivery. Many companies are providing same day glasses delivery service so you can get your eyeglass the same day your doctor prescribes it.

Still, most people do not follow proper instructions when their ophthalmologist prescribes them eyeglasses for regular wear. This negligence may worsen the condition of their eyesight. This article will focus on the importance of regular use of eyeglasses and discuss how eyeglasses protect and improve vision.

Eyeglasses Protect Eyes From UV Rays

Medical science has proved that Ultraviolet rays from sunlight cause severe damage to skin and eyes. Sunlight emits two types of UV rays: UVA and UVB. UVA rays are more dangerous than UVB as they are proved to be associated with many eyes and skin diseases. Overexposure to UVA rays may result in the following medical conditions:

  • Eye and eyelid cancers
  • Cataracts
  • Benign eye growth such as pterygium
  • Sunburn of eye cornea

The best way of protecting your eyes from the detrimental effects of UV rays is to wear your eyeglasses regularly. Keep in mind. A cloudy day does not mean there is no sunlight. The sky might be full of clouds, but you still need to protect your eyes from the harmful rays present all around.

Eyeglasses Protect Your Eyes From Trauma

Working as an ophthalmologist, I have seen patients who come with work or sports related eye injuries. The eye is a very delicate organ, and in most cases, the damage caused is irreversible. US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that more than 20,000 people suffer from work-related eye trauma every year. Wearing protective eyeglasses can save your eyes in case of any such accidents.

Selecting an appropriate safety goggle is essential to protect the permanent loss of vision caused by any accident or injury. Following things should be considered while choosing your protective eyeglasses:

  • Your glasses should completely cover your eyes without leaving any openings on the sides.
  • Glasses should be made of a strong plastic material such as polycarbonate to bear the shock.

Protective glasses are crucial, not only at workplaces but also during sports and other jobs such as lawn mowing at home to keep your eyes safe from injuries.

Do Eyeglasses Improve your Vision?

Many people believe that wearing eyeglasses worsen their eyesight. They associate eyeglasses with the weakening of eye muscles. They believe that forcing your eyes to focus on something to see it clearly helps strengthen the eye muscles. This is ridiculously wrong. Such practices may put your eyes under strain resulting in over fatigued eyes.

The most common reason why people wear glasses include nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. All of them are refractive errors which means the lens of your eye has started changing its shape. This change in the shape of the lens makes it difficult for light to reach the retina. As a result, brain cannot process the image accurately and you see blurry or double images of an object. You experience frequent headaches and eye strain due to such refractive eye problems.

Eyeglasses adjust to the natural lens of your eye and corrects the refractive angle. Hence you can enjoy seeing a sharp and accurate image of the object. On the other hand, if you won’t wear your glasses regularly, the symptoms of your eye condition such as tired eyes and headaches will start coming back.

Another important thing to remember here is that wearing wrong prescription glasses may worsen the refractive error especially in children. In adults, it causes severity in the symptoms. Your eyes may take a week or two to adjust to your eyeglasses but if you still experience the same symptoms you should get your eyesight rechecked.

Conclusion

If you are suffering from reduced vision due to any reason, following your ophthalmologist’s instructions properly will help you prevent any further loss or damage to your eyesight. Eyeglasses can help you see a clear image but only when you are wearing them. Moreover, protective eyeglasses save your eyes from any injury that may result in a permanent loss of vision. If you will not pay attention to what your ophthalmologist suggested you may regret later.
