The Pros of Wearing DenturesThe Cons Of Wearing DenturesThe Bottomline

Luckily, modern dentistry has provided a solution to such a predicament. Gone are the days when you’d have to avoid smiling or be extra conscious about talking to others due to missing teeth. This is where solutions like dentures come into the picture.

Dentures have been around for so many years now that one of your earliest recollections of them is of your grandparents using them. Rest assured, though, that dentures today are significantly better than those of the past, especially when made by reputable clinics like Howard Dental, among others.

There are many reasons to consider dentures, but there are drawbacks too. Read on to learn more.

The Pros of Wearing Dentures

Wearing dentures brings forth many advantages. They include:

  • Dentures Don’t Require Surgery

Not all patients are comfortable with the idea of having an invasive procedure done on them. Thus, it’s a significant advantage to have non-invasive dental or orthodontic treatment procedures available to you. If you’re seriously considering having dentures made, one of the first advantages you can bank on is that it doesn’t require any surgery at all.

  • Wearing Dentures Provides A Great Yet Natural-looking Smile

Missing teeth not only affect your smile, but they can make your face appear sunken as well. To remedy the ill effects of missing teeth on your looks, you ought to give dentures a try. With a well-crafted denture piece, you’ll get to enjoy a great yet natural-looking smile once again.

  • Dentures Are Easy To Maintain

Dentures are easy to maintain. After each meal, you only need to give your dentures a quick rinse.

An added denture upkeep tip: the dentures are best soaked in a glass of cool water when unused. This is usually done at night when you’re not wearing your dentures to prevent soreness and give your gums time to rest.

  • They’re A Cost-Friendly Solution

Dentists usually offer dentures or implants when you need to replace an entire row or set of teeth. The former is less expensive, contributing to its demand and popularity.

Dentures are cheaper than dental implants because they require less material to make and aren’t as time-consuming to do. Be upfront about your budget so your dental specialist can explain your options too.

Indeed, using dentures sets forth multiple perks that are hard to discount.

The Cons Of Wearing Dentures

Although they come with a lot of benefits, dentures have certain drawbacks too. They include:

  • It Takes Time To Adjust To Your Dentures

Despite how dentures are custom fitted to the patient’s gum and jaw specifications, it’ll take quite a bit of time before one gets fully adjusted to wearing dentures. At least for the first few days, expect discomfort and perhaps a few problems along the way. These issues are associated with getting used to how dentures feel and how to speak and eat while wearing them.

  • Dentures Aren’t A Permanent Solution

Your dentist can give you an approximate time as to how long your current dentures can last you before the need for a replacement sets in.

Even if you have the best dentures, your facial features may change over time. These changes will result in new dentures, as your old ones will no longer fit properly.

Generally, a good estimate as to when you’ll need to get new dentures is between five to eight years. This can be costly, but still a cheaper alternative to other tooth replacement options.

  • They Require Multiple Procedures Before Completion

A patient can’t expect to walk into a dental clinic and then walk out of it victorious and done with the procedure in a day. You must be ready to commit to at least a couple of trips back and forth, all necessary for the dentist to be sure you have the best-fitting dentures.

Why does it take long for your dentist to make your dentures? To start, they need to make a mold of your mouth. Then, if there are decayed teeth, those will have to be removed as well. After shaping, the dentures are placed in the patient’s mouth to test whether it’s already a perfect fit or if adjustments are necessary.

Although they carry certain disadvantages, don’t shut off your doors when it comes to availing yourself of dentures for your dental needs.

The Bottomline

Getting dentures is no walk in the park. You have to weigh their boons and banes to see if they’re a perfect treatment for your dental needs, look for a reputable dentist to make your dentures, and the like.

Hopefully, the points mentioned above helped you out in weighing in the different pros and cons of going for dentures. If you have any further questions regarding dentures, don’t hesitate to book a consultation with your preferred dentist for professional guidance.
