Mattresses maybe the last thing you think about it when you consider investing in your home. But a bad mattress can destroy your health. We buy a mattress once every twelve years, on average, and if we make a wrong decision it can have a lot of health complications. We look at how bad mattresses can negatively affect your health.

It Can Cause Back Pain

The most common side effect of a bad mattress is back pain. It?s estimated that 80% of Americans will suffer from back pain at some point in their lifetimes. Of course, not all these Americans will suffer back pain as a direct result of mattresses, but thousands of them will. Mattresses that lose their original shape don?t offer the correct back support. Cheaper mattresses are more likely to lose their shape faster. This pain can even become chronic if nothing is done about it.

Your Mattress Could Trigger Dust Mite Allergies

Dust mites are another common side effect of a poor mattress. Modern mattresses are much more resistant to dust mites and may even come with coverings to provide a barrier between you and their feces. The Mayo Clinic says that dust mites live off of dead skin cells, so if your mattress can?t be easily cleaned or doesn?t use the most hygienic materials possible, you?re going to have problems. Allergic reactions can involve triggering asthma, itchy eyes, coughing, and sneezing.

You May Experience Night Sweats

Some people wake up in the middle of the night covered in sweat. They naturally assume it?s just too warm, but your mattress could have something to do with it. Night sweating disrupts the sleep cycle and leads to unhygienic conditions, which can contribute to common pests. Mattresses made from a deep foam are the biggest offenders here. They hug the body, so the heat that your body generates doesn?t have anywhere to go. Your body responds through excessive sweating.

Your Mattress is Too Soft

When you think of the best mattress of 2019 you think of a soft, luscious mattress that you can sink into. It might feel good in the beginning, but it can quickly lead to joint soreness. A good mattress should keep your spine in a relatively straight line. It?s the sign that you?re receiving proper support. Without this support, you?re likely going to suffer from joint soreness.

All These Negative Health Effects Lead to Disrupted Sleep

Disrupted sleep means your body isn?t getting the rest it deserves. You can never enter that restful REM sleep cycle if you?re constantly waking up. Over time, this can lead to a ton of health effects caused by sleep deprivation, including: changes in mood, chronic fatigue, and even memory loss.

Last Word ? You Get What You Pay For

The world of mattresses is a simple one because you generally get what you pay for. If you want to spend a hundred dollars on a mattress, you?re not going to get a good mattress. Likewise, paying a few hundred dollars will always yield much better results. Sleep is important. So, you should always consider making a bigger investment. It?s a long-term purchase that will continue to deliver great results time and time again. So, what?s the right mattress for you? It depends. Everyone is different and when you throw in different health problems it makes it more complex. Some people need different firmness levels. Others may require elevated mattresses. It all depends on you. But the best thing you can do is replace your mattress after every eight to ten years. How old is your mattress?
