9 Signs You Need An Emergency Dentist

While most people would agree that life is short, and, as such, we should do everything in our power to enjoy it, accidents, unfortunately, are an inevitable part of life. Hence, there may come a time where you will need to avail yourself of the services of an emergency dentist in Toronto or another major city. Furthermore, any injury that involves your gums or teeth should not be left to chance. Also, while some dental injuries will eventually go away on their own, many will need to be treated, or they will spread and cause further damage.

For instance, your blood vessels or nerves can become injured from blunt force trauma, or a wound can become infected in time. A dental abscess can spread to the neck, head, lungs, and even heart and can cause life-threatening complications in some cases. Ergo, the best thing to do in a dental emergency is to go and see an emergency dentist as soon as possible. Here, we will discuss nine reasons that you need to see an emergency dentist in Toronto.

Dental Emergency

Many seemingly innocuous situations may warrant a visit to an emergency dentist in Toronto. For instance, a chipped tooth may seem relatively harmless, but it can cause radiating pain in due time. Accidental cracks can also lead to swelling and gum infections if left untreated, and if you happen to be bleeding from the mouth, then you may have gingivitis, periodontitis, or some other chronic dental condition that needs to be rectified as soon as possible.

Dental Issues That Call for an Emergency Dentist

A permanent tooth that has been completely dislodged from the mouth, or an avulsed tooth, must be taken care of by an emergency dentist as soon as possible. Every minute is crucial, and the sooner you can get the tooth to the dentist, the higher the chance that they will be able to replant it to its socket successfully.

Furthermore, if you have cracked a tooth, or have slightly chipped one of your teeth, then you may not feel the need to see a dentist unless there is severe pain involved. However, if you are dealing with a pronounced crack or fracture on one of your teeth then you should see an emergency dentist in Toronto as soon as you can; as leaving the tooth as is may lead to an infection that may necessitate a root canal or dental extraction.

Moreover, a displaced tooth that has become displaced from an injury should also be taken care of by an emergency dentist, as a displaced tooth can interfere with your bite and can also cause severe pain. A severe toothache that keeps you up at night should also warrant a visit to your local emergency dentist, as severe toothaches are usually caused by an infection, tooth decay, or trauma, and will only get worse with time.

In regards to a dental infection, the first red flag to look for is a pain, albeit not all gum or tooth infections cause pain. Instead, some may cause your gums to appear red, or you may notice that your mouth has become swollen. If you are having trouble swallowing (dysphagia) or breathing, please get in touch with an emergency dentist immediately.

Periodontal disease is also something that needs to be rectified as soon as possible, as it can lead to receding gums, halitosis, and bone loss. In the event that your gums are bleeding your dentist will not only identify the source but also stop the bleeding and prevent any malevolent bacteria from metastasizing.

Tissue injuries, while uncommon, should also be looked at by an emergency dentist. De facto, cuts and lacerations can occur to your cheeks, lips, tongue, and other oral tissues, and you should rinse your mouth with some water and apply gentle pressure to the affected area, using some cloth or gauze, before you arrive at the dentist’s office.

Damaged dental work is also something to look for, as lost or loose dental fillings can lead to tooth sensitivity and pain. What’s more, lost restorations and damaged crowns will need to be replaced or repaired asap before they lead to further decay and damage to your teeth.

Finally, sinus pressure is something that should not be taken lightly, as there is a direct correlation between sinus pressure and oral pain. As such, if you are experiencing both problems at once, then you will need to see an emergency dentist in order to rule out an impacted wisdom tooth or dental infection.

Tips to Choose a Good Emergency Dentist

A good emergency dentist in the city will have superlative availability, such as being available seven days a week, for 14 or 15 hours a day. Their prices should also be reasonable, as you do not want to use the services of a dentist that prioritizes the bottom line over the mental, physical and financial well-being of their patients.

They should also be able to handle virtually any dental emergency on-site, from dealing with a dry socket or dental abscess, to the extraction of impacted wisdom teeth or broken teeth or dentures. The dentist should have excellent patient reviews, so check reviews online or speak with your loved ones or colleagues to help find the best emergency dentist in your area.

What to Expect in an Emergency Dental Clinic

Given the fact that you will likely not make a planned appointment before visiting your emergency dentist, the dentist may not be able to solve your problem right then and there. However, what is certain is that they will help alleviate any pain or discomfort that you may be in and will either permanently solve the issue in one visit, or provide a temporary solution and ask you to return another time to solve the problem for good.
