Running is a great way to stay fit. It’s great for losing weight and keeping it off. What’s more, running has been shown to improve health and longevity. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced runner, here’s a look at our essential guide to the best women’s running gear.

1) Running shoes

A comfortable pair of running shoes should be at the top of your list if you want to run regularly. Keep in mind that specialized running shoes are made to prevent foot injuries from the repetitive motion of your feet hitting the ground with each step. Pick a shoe that offers to cushion your feet as that will help with shock absorption and is not likely to pinch or slide when you run. Be sure to have at least the width of a thumb between the end of the shoe and the end of your feet. Picking such a shoe will help keep your toes hitting the end of the shoe while you run. If you intend to run often, you may want to have more than one running shoe to avoid foot problems.

2) Running hats

A running hat is helpful to wear while running in the sun or when it’s raining. Pick an ultra-lightweight running hat that will help keep the sun’s rays out of your eyes and stop your hair from getting all over your face. A lightweight running hat that is made of moisture-wicking fabric will stop sweat and rainwater from distracting your vision. A running hat with breathable side panels will ensure you stay cool during your runs if it’s really hot. If it’s hydrophobic, your running hat will help in repelling water when you run in the rain.

3) Compression socks

Wearing compression gear such as compression socks may improve your performance or speed up your recovery after a tough run. When it comes to compression socks, you need to ensure that you get the right size since a loose fit will not have the desired effect of pushing blood up your leg. On the other hand, compression socks that are too tight may be hard to get on or will end up hampering your run. To ensure that you pick the right size, measure the widest part of your calves and match it against the size guide given on the compression sock’s pack. Try to pick a pair of compression socks that offer extra benefits like anti-blister fabric and reflective features that help you be more visible during your night runs.

4) Running bras

A good running bra is a must for any woman as it supports you during your runs. Try to go for a sports bra that offers high to super-high support levels. You need to pick the right size as the wrong size will make your runs extremely uncomfortable. If you are large-breasted, pick encapsulation bras that come with separate cups for each breast. Compression-style bras are meant for small-breasted women as they’ll flatten your breasts and provide just enough support for a comfortable run.

5) Running tops

If you’ve been running while wearing an old cotton t-shirt, then going for a proper running top will be a great experience. Running tops are made of fabrics that wick sweat from your skin and dry fast. As a result, your runs in sunny weather will be cool and comfortable. Furthermore, such tops will prevent chafing and help keep your body at the appropriate temperature, keeping you cool if it’s hot and warm if the weather is chilly. Try to pick running tops that have anti-odor properties. A running top made of Merino wool is an excellent pick as it has natural odor resistance, allowing you to wear the same top many times between washes. That is good for your laundry load, helpful for the environment, and great for your top’s longevity.

You can also create your own running tops. You may want to develop your own t-shirt design to make a beautiful shirt that you will enjoy running in.

6) Running jacket

A running jacket may make your runs enjoyable in inclement weather. Consider investing in a slightly expensive running jacket since costlier jackets tend to offer you more protection from the weather while being breathable at the same time. Pick the right size and ensure that the cut is close to your body so that you get complete freedom of movement while running. Such a close fit is necessary for comfort while running. However, ensure that there’s sufficient room underneath the jacket so that you can slip on extra layers if it gets chilly.

7) Running shorts

When looking for running shorts, keep in mind that you have mainly two options for the fit: compression shorts or shorts that are loose and breezy. Loose fits can help you feel less restricted during hot summer days. On the other hand, compression shorts help minimize the risk of chafing and help support your muscles. You can also consider going for 2-in-1 shorts that come with a loose outer and a compression inner. Try to go for running shorts that come in sweat-wicking material and have zipped pockets to store essential items, such as keys, your ID card, etc.
