Hemorrhoids can be mild or they can cause severe pain and discomfort. Fortunately, hemorrhoids home treatment is both easy and advisable. There are many hemorrhoid home remedies available.

You can help to treat your hemorrhoids by the following home remedies for hemorrhoids together with general tips for relief from pain and discomfort:

  • Drinking lots of liquids, especially water, and eating a healthy diet with plenty of fruit, vegetables and fiber so that you do not get constipated. Beans, broccoli, carrots, bran, oats and fresh fruits are especially good. Your daily intake of fiber should be between 25 and 35 grams.  Just be warned that you may experience more gas for the first few days while your body is getting used to this extra fiber.

  • There are some fruits that are especially helpful for relieving hemorrhoids – pure fruit juice with no additives, cherries, blackberries, blueberries, cantaloupe melons, red and black currants, pomegranate juice, oranges, bananas and papayas.

  • If necessary, and while you are building up a healthy diet, take a bulk forming laxative for a couple of days to stop constipation by softening your stools.  Look for a natural product rather than an over-the-counter chemical product.

  • Exercise regularly. A brisk 20 minute walk every day will make all the difference but there are plenty of other exercises to choose from too.

  • Be careful not to push or strain when you have a bowel movement and make sure you do not sit on the toilet too long either. Don’t be tempted to spend a long time reading and avoid holding your breath while having a bowel movement. Train yourself to have a set time each day for a bowel movement and never put off the urge when you need to go.

  • Treat coughing, diarrhea or constipation as soon as you notice any of these conditions.

  • Avoid sitting or standing too long. Make sure you get up and walk around and change your position frequently.

  • Avoid lifting heavy objects and if you must, then exhale as you lift the object but don’t hold your breath.

  • Soak the hemorrhoid area in a sitz bath or a basin of warm water whenever you feel the need. This can be several times a day and will give relief from the discomfort of hemorrhoids.

  • Apply ice packs or a cool cotton compress to the anal area for further relief.

  • Keep the anal areas clean by using soft moistened toilet paper or baby wipes. Both should be non-scented to avoid irritation. You can even get special medicated wipes these days to use for hemorrhoids. Some contain witch hazel. Witch hazel can be used in different ways for hemorrhoids: witch hazel ointment for applying to the hemorrhoids or you can soak a cotton ball in witch hazel and leave it on the opening to the anal canal for about an hour several times per day. This hemorrhoids home treatment will relieve the pain and swelling of hemorrhoids.

  • Never rub or scrub the hemorrhoidal area is it can be very sensitive.

  • Take a mild pain reliever if necessary but be careful of the ingredients as any containing codeine can actually cause or worsen constipation.

  • Garlic can be used as a natural hemorrhoids home treatment by steeping 2 garlic cloves in a pot containing 2 cups of water. Heat for 30 minutes and then cool the garlic water before applying as a natural hemorrhoids treatment.

  • Butcher’s Broom is another suggestion and comes in the form of capsules or tea and is said to have anti inflammatory properties which work to shrink the swelling of the veins and tissues affected with hemorrhoids.

  • Some people find a doughnut shaped hemorrhoids pillow helpful while others prefer just an ordinary small pillow to sit on.

  • Use a natural product for healing hemorrhoids made from essential oils or herbs. Such products are gentle and safe to use in this delicate area and often have anti inflammatory properties to relieve pain and reduce the swelling. The emphasis these days is to use pure natural products rather than those over-the-counter ones made from synthetic chemicals.

By working to treat hemorrhoids at source, these natural home remedies for hemorrhoids have proven effective in both treating the symptoms of the problem and preventing recurrence. If you can persevere with this home treatment, the chances are extremely high that you will successfully treat your hemorrhoids.
