Learn how to Renew your Medical Card in West Virginia
SHARE

Renewing your West Virginia medical marijuana card is essential to maintain uninterrupted access to therapeutic cannabis. In West Virginia, cards expire one year after issuance, so timely renewal ensures you continue to manage qualifying conditions, such as chronic pain, PTSD, or epilepsy, without a lapse in legal protection. This guide walks you through the medical card renewal process, from scheduling your annual evaluation to submitting your state application, and explains how MMJ can make renewals fast and hassle-free.

1. Know Your Renewal Window

West Virginia requires patients to renew their medical cannabis cards annually. You can submit a renewal application up to 90 days before your card’s expiration date. Renewing early prevents gaps in coverage: once your card expires, you lose legal access until the renewal is approved.

2. Schedule Your Annual Physician Certification

The first step to renew your West Virginia medical marijuana card is to meet with a participating physician. West Virginia law mandates that doctors complete a four-hour medical cannabis training course before certifying patients. You may choose an in-person visit or a convenient telemedicine appointment. During this evaluation, the physician will:

  • Confirm your qualifying condition still warrants medical cannabis.
  • Review any updated medical records or changes in health status.
  • Complete and sign the Patient Certification Form required by the Office of Medical Cannabis (OMC).

3. Access the State’s Online Renewal Portal

Once you have your signed certification, log in to the West Virginia Medical Cannabis Registry at mycomplia website. Under “Applications,” select “Patient Renewal” and “Create Application.” The system will pre-populate much of your existing information—simply update any changes (address, phone number, etc.) before proceeding.

4. Upload Required Documents

In the renewal portal, you must upload:

  • Your physician’s signed certification.
  • A digital, passport-style photo taken within the past six months.
  • Proof of West Virginia residency (a utility bill or lease agreement).
  • A valid government-issued photo ID (driver’s license or state ID).

Ensure your photo meets the state’s specifications (neutral background, full face visible) to avoid delays.

5. Pay the Renewal Fee

The standard renewal fee is $50. You may pay online via the portal or mail a check to:
Office of Medical Cannabis
350 Capitol Street, Room 523
Charleston, WV 25301

If your household income is below 200% of the federal poverty level, you can request a fee waiver by submitting recent pay stubs, tax returns, or other proof of income.

6. Submit and Monitor Your Application

After uploading documents and payment, click “Submit.” The OMC typically processes renewals within 30–60 days. You can log back into the portal at any time to check your application’s status. Once approved, you’ll receive a digital card and instructions for printing, plus a physical card by mail.

7. Avoid Common Pitfalls

  • Renew Early: Waiting until the last minute risks expired cards if processing runs long.
  • Check Photo Guidelines: Non-compliant photos are a frequent source of rejection.
  • Keep Records Handy: Ensure your physician uploads the certification promptly to the portal.

Streamline Your Renewal with MMJ

At MMJ our state-certified medical marijuana doctors specialize in efficient telemedicine renewals for West Virginia patients. Here’s how we help:

  • Same-Day Telehealth Visits: Book mornings, evenings, or weekends.
  • Document Support: We guide you through photo and residency requirements.
  • Direct State Submission: Once approved, we upload your certification to the OMC portal immediately.

Don’t let your West Virginia medical marijuana card renewal slip through the cracks. Schedule your online evaluation at MMJ today and keep enjoying uninterrupted access to compassionate cannabis care.
