Some of the best new of my week came from “Down Under.”

The Australian version of the FDA, the ARTG, gave GlobalMed approval to sell the TotalExam™2 Exam Camera in that country.  This is big news because the Australians are gearing up for a nationwide telemedicine program to provide remote areas with quality medical care.

The Australian government has incentivized its healthcare providers.  It will pay a one-off, lump sum to practitioners upon successful “lodgement”(filing)  of their first consultation claim.  Plus it will make an ongoing, quarterly payment based on the number of telehealth consultations provided by the practitioner during that quarter.  Similar incentives are available to “eligible aged care facilities.”

When considering an examination camera, most clinicians favor the TotalExam because it’s easy to hold, easy to use, and is USB based.  The S-Video camera can be used with a legacy telepresence system or connect to a computer with its USB adaptor.
