Frequently asked questions about dental implants

What are dental implants? Dental implants are a two-part unit that consists of a titanium root and crown made of a versatile range of material, from superior to mediocre depending on your budget. The structure of the implants offers unprecedented long-lasting support and stability, as opposed to alternative treatments. What is the best material for the crown? The ideal material for the crown is zirconium, owing to its unique properties. Zirconium has the best infusion rate with dental tissue in comparison to alternative material. In addition, the metal accurately mimics the function of natural teeth and handles pressure of chewing without the risk of chipping. What dental issues do dental implants treat? Dental implants are designed to replace missing teeth. The structure of dental implants can come as individual implants or a blend of dental implants and dental bridges. Usually, individual implants are advised in the case a patient suffers one or two missing teeth. Otherwise, dental bridges sandwiched in between dental implants is the ideal approach for financial purposes. With dental implants at each end, the jaw bone will be stimulated, the crowns secured properly, and your money preserved. What does a dental implant procedure constitute? The procedure of a dental implant constitutes three main steps. The first step includes implanting the root individually. Patients often have to have a healing break after the implantation of the titanium root in the jaw bone. Once the bone has healed and infused with the root, which often requires a period of three months to heal, patients then proceed with the remaining of the procedure. The second step is to apply a unit that securely connects the crown to the root. Later, the crown is custom made for every individual patient in accordance to their budget, size and shape of teeth, and their color as well.

The benefits of dental implants

1. Prevents bone erosion Unlike alternative tooth treatments, dental implants are the single tooth replacement treatment that replaces the root as well as the crown. The functions of the root are not limited to anchoring the crown. In reality, the root preserves bone volume by stimulating blood circulation around the bone in its vicinity. Post tooth loss, the patients faces a risk of losing bone volume in the affected area. Within the first year alone, an approximate 25% of bone loss is to be expected if the gap isn’t replaced during that time period. 2. Maintains the original alignment of teeth With spacious gaps, teeth tend to engage in a peculiar activity where dental tissue tends to migrate closer to the gap at either sides in an attempt to prevent bone erosion. This creates wider gaps between the teeth and disturbs the natural alignment. In addition to affecting the appearance of your teeth, when teeth migrate closer to one another, they make the gap smaller, affecting thereby the potential of having dental implants in the future. 3. Prevents sagging of facial skin Without teeth to support the structure of your facial muscles, the skin tends to shrink in. Over a period of time, if professional help is not sought, this could result in wrinkling around the mouth area and cheeks. 4. Improves speech Speech depends on various oral tissue and muscles to properly pronounce words. With the loss of teeth, the ability to make many of the letter sounds fades. To restore your pronunciation skills, you have to restore your teeth. While dentures serve that purpose, they make speech a lot harder, due to their lack of stability and anchoring. Dental implants are the only tooth restoration treatment that genuinely improves speech problems related to missing teeth for the presence of a root within their structure. 5. Improves digestion The process of digestion begins with the mouth, where your saliva and teeth cooperate to break down food to help your stomach. With missing teeth or even dentures, patients tend to have a difficult time chewing, which in turn causes problem with digesting. Chewing requires force and consequently stability and anchor which dental implants can provide. Conclusion Dental implants can make a big difference in your overall wellbeing and have many benefits. Here is what to know.
