As the temperatures soar, it can be difficult to stay motivated to exercise. However, regular physical activity is important for maintaining overall health and well-being. Let’s explore some heatwave hacks to help you exercise and stay cooler in high temperatures.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate, and Hydrate Some More

The first and most important rule for exercising in hot weather is to stay hydrated. Dehydration can lead to a variety of health issues, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Aim to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water per day, and more if you’re exercising in the heat. You can also include hydrating foods such as watermelon, cucumbers, and strawberries in your diet.

The Time of Day Matters

The timing of your exercise can make a big difference in how you feel. Try to avoid exercising during the hottest part of the day, usually between 11 am and 3 pm. Instead, opt for early morning or late evening workouts when temperatures are cooler. If you’re unable to exercise at these times, try to find air-conditioned indoor spaces to work out in.

Invest in a Gym Membership

If it’s just too hot for you to exercise outdoors as it can get in El Paso, Dallas, and even Phoenix, then a gym membership is worth the investment. Going to the gym during a heatwave can be a great way to stay active while staying cool. There are plenty of gyms in El Paso, Dallas, Phoenix, and other notoriously hot cities to choose from so you can beat the heat waves while still staying active.

Dress Appropriately

Wearing the right clothing can help keep you cool and comfortable during exercise. Fashion technology has come a long way and newer fabrics have many options that help keep you cool in the hot summer sun. Opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics such as cotton or moisture-wicking materials. Loose-fitting clothing can also help promote airflow and keep you cool. Avoid dark colors, as they absorb more heat unless they are made from one of those newer materials.

Get Creative with Your Workouts

There are plenty of ways to exercise without leaving the comfort of your air-conditioned home. You can find a variety of workout videos on YouTube or download a fitness app on your phone. Alternatively, try using resistance bands or hand weights to create your own workout routine. Yoga and Pilates are also great options for low-impact exercise from the comfort of home.

Go for a Swim

Swimming is a great way to exercise in the heat while staying cool. It’s a full-body workout that almost anyone can do. You can swim laps or try water aerobics for a low-impact workout. If you don’t have access to a pool, consider visiting a nearby lake or beach for a refreshing swim. Most cities have a spot where swimmers can go.

Try Indoor Cycling

Peloton people love their indoor cycling. But you can get a great workout even without all the bells and whistles included on a Peloton. Indoor cycling is a popular workout option that can be done in air-conditioned gyms or at home on a stationary bike. Cycling is a great workout that can be adjusted to your fitness level. You’ll burn calories and strengthen your heart and cardiovascular system as well.

Modify Your Workout

If you’re feeling tired or overheated during your gym workout, it’s important to listen to your body and modify your workout if necessary. Consider doing lower-intensity exercises or taking breaks to cool down. You can use these breaks to get some electrolytes to ensure that your cells have everything they need. Learn the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke so that you can stop before you get that far.

Utilize Cooling Accessories

There are several accessories you can use to help keep you cool during exercise in hot weather. Consider investing in a cooling towel, which can be soaked in water and wrapped around your neck to provide instant relief. You can also wear a hat or visor to shield your face from the sun, and sunglasses to protect your eyes.

Stay in the Shade

If you’re exercising outdoors, try to stay in the shade as much as possible. This can help lower your body temperature and reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses. Look for parks with shaded areas or create your own shade with an umbrella or canopy while you are outdoors.

Conclusion

It’s possible to beat the summer heat and still get in your exercises. Whether you love to run outdoors or you are part of a walking club, it’s important to have a plan for how to handle the hottest days. Going indoors at a gym or doing a home workout can help you stay active without getting heat stroke.
