Target Identification and Validation

The first step in drug discovery involves identifying a biological target linked to a disease, such as a protein or gene. Once a target is identified, researchers validate its role in the disease process to ensure that modulating its activity can produce a therapeutic effect. This stage often requires advanced techniques like computational modeling or genetic studies to establish a clear pathway for intervention.

Lead Compound Identification

After validating the target, scientists search for compounds that can interact with it effectively. Screening libraries of chemicals, natural products, or biologics, including antibody screening, is a critical part of this stage. High-throughput screening technologies allow researchers to test thousands of potential compounds quickly, identifying those with promising activity. These leads are then optimized to enhance their efficacy, safety, and bioavailability.

Preclinical and Clinical Testing

Once a lead compound is optimized, it undergoes rigorous preclinical testing in vitro and in vivo to evaluate its safety and biological activity. If successful, the compound moves into clinical trials, a multi-phase process involving human participants. These trials assess the drug’s safety, dosage, and effectiveness, ultimately determining whether it can receive regulatory approval for public use.
