Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators (SARMs) belong to a class of performance-enhancing compounds that are similar to steroids in that they are both used to enhance muscular physique. However, SARMs are distinctly different and are unregulated in the US largely due to their significant side effects – which include the potential for prostrate issues, hair loss and acne. The potential health benefits (and negatives) of SARMs have been heavily researched and debated in recent years. This article will give an overview of these supplements and their associated side effects and conclude by offering some qualitative alternatives.

What are SARMs?

As mentioned above, SARMs are similar to anabolic steroids. However, they are designed to be more selective in their action, stimulating changes in DNA that can enlarge muscle mass. SARMs target and bind to specific androgen receptors in the body in muscle and bone tissue while avoiding other receptors, potentially causing unpleasant side effects. As this type of selective binding in SARMs can potentially result in increased muscle mass, strength, and bone density, it is also used to treat some severe illnesses. If you are considering ingesting SARMs, due to their problematic side effects Dallasnews.com reviewed the best SARMs alternatives to consider instead. It is critical to consult your doctor and research all potential options before adopting a course of supplements.

Who is recommended to use SARMs?

Firstly, the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) has not approved SARMs for human consumption, meaning they cannot be purchased over the counter. Currently, their primary use is largely confined to the treatment of severe illnesses such as multiple sclerosis, liver cancer, osteoporosis, muscular atrophy and Alzheimer’s. Thinking of testosterone as a model molecule, several SARMs have been manufactured to mimic the proven effects of testosterone on the body. Ultimately, SARMs are only used to treat these diseases in extreme cases or when alternative treatments were unsuccessful. As a result, doctors will not easily prescribe SARMs due to their strict FDA control.

Who should avoid SARMs?

There are specific groups who are recommended to avoid using SARMs entirely. It should be noted that multiple athletes in different competitive sports have tested positive for SARMs and were subsequently banned or suspended. Along with athletes, the specific groups include:

Potential SARMs side effects

The FDA lists several major side effects from the prolonged use of SARMs. These include:

  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Liver damage (in 50% of users)
  • Cardiovascular problems
  • Suppression of natural testosterone production
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Headaches
  • Insomnia

What are the alternatives to SARMs?

As SARMs are still not fully approved by the FDA, it is strongly recommended to avoid consumption and seek an alternative supplement with similar characteristics. Again, it is absolutely critical to consult a doctor before beginning a course of supplements and fully research beforehand. SARMs can include Osta 2866 (Ostarine MK-2866), Testol 140 (Testolone Rad 140), Ligan 4033 (Ligandrol LGD-4033), C-Dine 501516 (Cardarine GW501516), Stena 9009 (Stenabolic SR9009), and Ibuta 677 (Ibutamoren MK 677).

These alternatives are all legal, which can also mean they are considered safe for use by the FDA as a daily supplement for bulking, weight loss, increased energy levels, muscle recovery and enhanced strength. It is important to read the label on any supplements and always strictly adhere to dosage requirements. However, it is vital to know that some supplements do not detail the chemicals they contain – particularly if the source of manufacture is ambiguous. Always thoroughly research what companies are trustworthy and read customer reviews before purchasing any supplements.

A balanced diet and exercise are priceless

In addition to these supplements, there are natural alternatives that are always preferable to adopt. It can never be understated that a balanced diet rich in proteins, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates can change how you look and feel. Regular exercise and weightlifting in concurrence with a healthy diet can naturally reshape the body with significantly-reduced risk. If you do consider taking some natural supplements, always use them as a “boost” and not as a single solution. Other alternatives include creatine, beta-alanine and protein powders. Once again, before taking these supplements, always consult your doctor for advice.

Concluding remarks

In conclusion, although SARMs are used cautiously when treating severe illnesses, it is essential to note that the FDA has not approved their use as a food supplement. Therefore, it is essential to approach SARMs with caution and only consider consuming these supplements after receiving proper medical advice. It is recommended to fully research alternative ways to lose weight and build muscle. It is important to remember that SARMs are never a sustainable substitute for a healthy diet and exercise regimen, and there is no long-term shortcut to achieving your fitness goals.
